A boy discusses a game of modern warfare. Boys tell scary stories. A man smacks his car with an object. Asthma attack. Great White shark attack (on television). Yelling, shouting, bickering. A father tears his son's bedroom apart. Screaming. People experience blackouts, seizures, behave as if possessed. Tall alien-like beings are seen. Head-banging. A boy is shot with a paintball gun. A man attacks a child. Men fight, wrestle, punch. Eyeless face. Photos, news articles of missing children seen. Doors smashed. Home invasion. Gunfire, knife raised. Suicide by gunshot (implied). Abduction, missing child. Blood/gore: Animal blood smears windows, walls. Heavy blood splatter on cupboards, walls, people. Corpse. Bites, scars, bruising. Bloody nose, bloody clothing.

Boys watch a pornographic film. Two females have their clothed breasts squeezed by males. Kissing. Spicing up sex life (mentioned). Swimwear, clingy nightwear.

Marijuana, drug paraphernalia. Stoned behaviour. A woman consumes pills. Alcohol (beer, wine, spirits). Smoking.

S-words, derogatory terms for females, slang for male and female genitalia. Name-calling. Cultural and gender stereotyping.

Science fiction, aliens, abduction, child abuse, families, failure, financial difficulties, stress, unemployment, extra-terrestrials, allergies, illness, unexplainable events, possession, alien markings, skepticism, alien encounters, hallucination, suicide, paranoia.

July 4th setting. Full moon. Barbecuing meat, bacon. Lizard (without tail), flocks of birds, dead animals, cats, dog. A boy kicks a dead animal. Spitting. Sleepwalking. Bad dreams, rehabilitation, the Sandman, sleep-eating disorder, avian flu, hailstorms, lightning, seizure, MRI, emotional trauma, cancer (mentioned). A family experiences financial troubles. Urine-soaked shorts. Fireworks, firecrackers. Murdered mother seen (dream). TV picture distortion creates strobe effect.

Spooky. Moments of disconcerting drama. Slow-burn approach to narrative (which doesn't work, incidentally). Best thing about the film is the Arthur C Clarke quote that opens it.

No suspense or plot unravelling, lacks atmosphere. Terrible sceenplay, performances. Absurd, boring, bad, superficial. You might believe in aliens but the actors clearly don't. Pointless sub-plots. Formulaic.
